One of the Premier League teams that might not make any transfers this summer is Liverpool. That won’t stop it from acquiring the best player in the division, though.
Liverpool doesn’t often sign big-name players. Thus, it’s remarkable that it might have the Premier League’s biggest star by far by the end of the summer.
In particular, under FSG, but even before then, Liverpool has avoided acquiring players with a track record of success at the highest levels. The fact that the Reds are the only team to sign a Champions League winner and a serial champion straight out of one of Europe’s traditional powerhouses may have contributed significantly to the buzz around Thiago Alcantara.
And see the result of that. Cliché or not, Anfield is primarily a location for creating stars, not for purchasing them.
Take Mohamed Salah, please. The Egyptian was undoubtedly prepared for a second chance at the Premier League, as seen by his performance in Italy, but the Reds were unavoidably signing a Chelsea failure.
It was a risk. However, in the interim, Salah has developed into the kind of player that Liverpool could never have directly recruited to Anfield; he is now a living legend of the Premier League and has been regarded as one of the best players in the world for the past five or six years.
Actually, only Kevin De Bruyne among current players can truly contend to be on par with Salah in terms of superstar status. Two of the greatest names in the Premier League, they have been pillars of consistency lately, producing goals and assists at an exceptional level without stopping.
De Bruyne has typically emerged victorious when it comes to Manchester City. Liverpool supporters, however, would fiercely argue that Salah is the finest player in the league; the 32-year-old regularly finishes behind De Bruyne in terms of creativity while still producing the goals that a forward does.
Still, there’s a discussion to be had. The fact that the two are far superior than the rest of the field, however, is not up for debate.
However, it’s possible that they won’t compete against each other for very long. De Bruyne and Al-Ittihad are reportedly in agreement on terms, and Manchester City has no intention of getting in the way of him.
By the way, this would bring De Bruyne and former Liverpool player Fabinho together. However, it would leave Slot by and away the biggest fish in the pond back in the Premier League.
It would be impossible to declare Salah as the league’s top player with certainty. Younger players are making waves; last season, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard were all outstanding, despite the fact that the Liverpool player would always support himself.
However, Salah is now without a doubt the indisputable Premier League poster boy when it comes to status, stardom, performance level, and long-term consistency. That’s a huge advantage for Liverpool and a credit to the hiring that initially brought him to Anfield; now, the pressure is on Michael Edwards to repeat the trick.
