Over the past few weeks, Liverpool has continued to explore for a replacement for Jurgen Klopp. The Reds have examined Xabi Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi, and Ruben Amorim.
When Jurgen Klopp originally informed the Reds squad of his departure, he cautioned his teammates that there would be “a lot of noise” about his replacement.
At the end of this season, Klopp, 56, will depart from Liverpool, ending his nine-year tenure as manager. The German made his choice known to the Anfield upper management in November, and when it was made public in January, it created a rumor about who would take his place in the dugout.
The favorite at first was former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso, but the Bayer Leverkusen manager ultimately made the decision to remain in Germany because he is predicted to win the Bundesliga this year. Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of Brighton, briefly seemed to be leading the race when it was revealed that Liverpool had chosen to go elsewhere.
Next was Ruben Amorim, the head coach of Sporting Lisbon, who merely confirmed Klopp’s claim by supposedly having a verbal understanding with the Reds. Trent Alexander-Arnold disclosed to Sky Sports last month exactly what Klopp told his team when he initially broke the news.
Alexander-Arnold remembered, “He told us, ‘Look we’re professionals, don’t let it get to us. “There will be a lot of noise around, of course, but we have got to go and do our job, try and win games and give him the best possible finish.”
Amorim’s team is still fighting for the domestic league title, just like Liverpool is, in order to secure the best possible finish. Despite rumors of a move to Anfield, Sporting is the team he is concentrating on because they are favorites to win the Liga Portugal this year.
“I’m going to stop talking about my future now,” an irate Amorim declared at a press conference on Thursday. Nothing will change—the one thing we all want here is to be champions for Sporting—there was no interview and certainly no agreement.
“As a Sporting coach, I haven’t had any interviews or agreements with any clubs; my only emphasis is on supporting my team as always. There will be no interviews or agreements with the Sporting coach, as I have nothing further to say. Whether it is for this club or another, the issue has been fully settled.”
Julian Nagelsmann of Germany and Simone Inzaghi, the manager of Inter Milan, have also been suggested as potential possibilities for the Liverpool position. Nagelsmann’s contract with Inter expires at the end of this summer’s European Championship, while Inzaghi’s with Inter expires in 2025.
