Preston North End was the opponent in Liverpool’s first preseason game, which was played behind closed doors on Friday. On the field, the Reds could definitely sense that they were playing against a squad that was further along in its preseason.
It was Robbie Brady’s magnificent goal that gave Preston the victory. They won 1-0, and their lone effort on goal proved to be enough.
Liverpool’s start was not flawless, but it did have certain advantages. After all, it was more of an endeavor to get the guys competitively fit than a serious friendly.
After the game, Arne Slot discussed it and had some encouraging things to say. Yes, this wasn’t the intended outcome, but he did see what he was hoping to see.
Absolutely, without a doubt [I saw my thoughts out there],” Slot said to LFCTV. “I’ve noticed this a lot in training, possibly a little more than today, but it also had to do with the opponent’s style of play.
As I already stated, we had total control of the game and gave up just one shot. Although it was a fantastic goal, the unfortunate part of it was that the shot was successful. We had several excellent opportunities and build-up moments during the first half.
We didn’t seem to generate much in the second half, which is to be expected given that several of the team’s younger players occasionally didn’t play in their natural places.
“So, in the first two weeks, the lads have exceeded our expectations; they have worked incredibly hard and attempted to put our ideas into practice; we don’t just bring fresh ideas to the table. Many excellent things that have been done here can be listed.
“So, as I mentioned, it’s unfortunate to lose 1-0 if you only gave up one goal.”
Liverpool still has more to offer, but the players’ rapid adoption of the new concepts is encouraging. It is now hoped that as his side plays friendlies over the next month, Slot will see it more often.
When the team plays Ipswich to start the season, they should be able to demonstrate their true abilities. That’s the important thing.
