Joe Gomez, a defender for Liverpool, has blasted Brazil’s discipline following England’s Wembley defeat. In the friendly, Brazil’s adolescent Endrick scored the game’s winning goal in the second half, and the Three Lions defeated 1-0.
For his first debut for his country in four years, Gomez replaced left-back Ben Chilwell as a substitute in the second half. Harry Kane, the captain of England, was absent from the game, as was Bukayo Saka, and Kyle Walker had to leave with an injury.
At halftime, England coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink got into a heated altercation with the fourth official over a number of calls made in the first half.
Brazil’s players committed a lot of fouls, which infuriated the home crowd. Lucas Paqueta, the star player for West Ham, was very lucky not to receive a yellow card. After the game, Gomez questioned Brazil’s discipline.
“I’m sure that the amount of fouls they committed was towards the higher end of the scale,” stated the Liverpool defender. It simply indicates that neither team played the game as a friendly and that they both wanted to win.
“Gareth [Southgate] wants us to approach the game the way he wants us to because it’s a vital moment for the squad, going up to a major event.
It was good to be there because it’s a big matchup versus a great club. We should have won, but we didn’t. The team was really good and controlled the most of the match. With that opportunity, they demonstrated their abilities.”
When England plays Belgium on Tuesday night, Gomez will be hoping to be involved from the beginning. “Brazil has established quality up front,” he continued. They demonstrated their sharpness with such combinations, demonstrating their exceptional skill in and around the box. They successfully completed the game, and those are the narrow margins.”
They performed admirably, but we also have a lot of reasons for optimism. We had strong possession and good ball control. The match on Tuesday [against Belgium] is crucial. We wish to regain our momentum.”
England had a challenging evening as their plans for Euro 2024 suffered. But Brazil is still the best team, and Gareth Southgate will have gained a lot of knowledge. Gomez has already demonstrated his adaptability this season, most notably at left-back, but given England’s defensive shortcomings in central defense, he is unlikely to be denied a chance to play in his preferred position.
