Former Barcelona striker and club star Luis Suarez made the shocking assertion that Real Madrid wanted to sign him in the summer of 2014 when speaking with DelSol 99.5 FM.
At the time, Suarez was still at Liverpool and had made a name for himself as one of the Premier League’s most prolific goal scorers.
The Uruguayan striker, who is currently playing for Inter Miami, said that Real Madrid was one of the several teams bidding for his signature in 2014.
Suarez continued by saying that Los Blancos were pressuring to sign Karim Benzema as a replacement and intended to transfer him to Arsenal at the moment.
Real Madrid wanted me before the 2014 World Cup because they wanted to trade Benzema to Arsenal. According to Suarez, Luis Enrique was pressuring Barcelona at the time and the team was interested.
Things did not turn out that way, either, as he received a hefty four-month sentence for biting Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy. Nevertheless, Barça persisted in their efforts even after the incident, which is how he got to Camp Nou.
“Despite the punishment in the bite case, Barcelona persisted in wanting to sign me. “I will always be appreciative of that,” the legendary Uruguayan said.
Suarez went on to become a legendary player at Barcelona, taking home numerous medals and wins. Concurrently, Benzema flourished at Real Madrid, becoming a legend and leaving a lasting impression on the team’s history until departing last summer.
Everything seemed to work out in the end for all parties.
