Following Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Sheffield United, Alexis Mac Allister interrupted his interview to praise Cody Gakpo’s contribution, following a trying time for the Dutchman.

Gakpo’s performances since joining Liverpool have come under close examination, especially following the team’s 4-3 loss to Manchester United.

Jamie Carragher expressed his annoyance at a player who he said “plays like the game is in slow motion” after the Reds were eliminated from the FA Cup.

It’s debatable if that was justified, but Gakpo returned to the scoresheet on Thursday, heading in to make it 3-1 and secure the win over Sheffield United.

During their post-game interview with TNT Sports, Mac Allister used the chance to compliment his teammate, demonstrating that the club is aware of the criticism directed at their No. 18.

“I’m really happy for this guy,” he interrupted when someone asked about getting revenge on Manchester United.

“He’s been working incredibly hard, and he achieved his goal today.

“He’s one of these guys who works really hard, and he’s always cheerful and a terrific group leader, so I’m quite delighted about that.

“I’m thrilled for the team and for him.”

It is encouraging to see Mac Allister stand up for Gakpo, who has scored 14 goals this season to tie Diogo Jota for third place among Liverpool’s scorers, despite some people’s opinions about his play.

The Argentine will take center stage, though, thanks to his incredible goal that made it 2-1 and effectively won the match.

Mac Allister was asked which of the two goals he thought was the finest after he scored a goal similar to that in the 4-3 victory over Fulham in December.

The midfielder said, “I don’t know, we were talking about that, I think both of them were good.”

Gakpo cut him off, saying, “I think this one was best!”

“What matters most is that it contributed to the game’s victory, and that’s really significant,” Mac Allister went on.

“They said I was lucky against Fulham, so I had to prove them wrong today!”
